Building a strong community website

One of the country’s largest male-based community development organisations, the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) runs vibrant hubs for members to knock around with mates. But to strengthen engagement, drive donations and encourage more people to join their local Men’s Shed, AMSA had to reinvigorate its online identity.

Our team stepped in to transform its branding (see brand manual here) and develop a custom WordPress community website design (see that here), which was a finalist in the Best Community & Culture Website + Best Not for Profit Website categories at the 2023 Australian Web Awards 🥳

A brand overhaul to showcase core values

AMSA needed a big brand refresh to reflect its focus on grass roots and shoulder-to-shoulder camaraderie.

So that’s just what our design team did!

To bring the lively energy, social connection and rustic feel found at each Men’s Shed into its branding, we used an earthy colour palette with textured surfaces. Halftone patterns and hand-drawn illustrations convey craftsmanship and action, while modern and quirky typography highlights AMSA’s friendly, laid back nature.

Plus, the new logo’s solid structure and bold word mark capture this steadfast community’s strong bonds. To top it off, we created a clear set of guidelines and templates to make sure AMSA’s brand identity stays consistent across all comms.

Engaging a vibrant community

With clear buttons to donate and enter the Member Portal in the header, it’s simple for existing members to take key actions from anywhere on the site. And thanks to the handy search tool on the home page, prospective members can enter their postcode to find the nearest Men’s Shed, its contact details and a spotlight on its features.

Meanwhile, the Events index details what’s on in the AMSA community and The Shed Online blog shares its latest news. What’s more, users can explore every season of The Wireless Shed podcast, listening directly on each episode page or on Apple or Google with a single click. Complete with eCommerce capabilities, this solid new website also makes it a breeze to buy AMSA merch online through The Shed Shop.
