We’re looking for an experienced, skilled WordPress web developer to join our team (ideally Newcastle-based, but we’re open to remote if you’re in AU/NZ. Please do not apply if you are not located in Australia or New Zealand).

Founded in 1999, Redback is one of Australia’s longest-running digital agencies, specialising in website design and development, content creation and digital marketing services. From small companies, to large corporates, government and Ecommerce businesses, our tight-knit team of 30 have experience working with a wide range of clients.

Our web team currently comprises of 8 web developers and designers specialising in WordPress website development, with some Shopify projects from time to time as well.
Web developer roles at Redback
Desired skills & experience (may vary depending on whether you’re suited to senior or mid-level role)
- Ideally, you’ll need at least 5 years of real world experience developing responsive WordPress websites, preferably within an agency or building sites for clients as a freelancer.
- Ability to develop WordPress websites efficiently and effectively
- Ability to write standards-based CSS, HTML and JavaScript
- Strong PHP / WordPress development skills essential. For senior roles, you’ll ideally be well-versed in developing custom WordPress themes
- Experience with CSS pre-processors (We use Sass)
- Experience with BEM coding framework preferred
- Strong understanding of cross-browser / device compatibility issues
- Comfortable working with version control and collaborating on the same repo as your teammates.
- Experience with emerging web development technologies would be a bonus eg. Progressive Web Apps, REST API, Headless WordPress, modern coding languages, etc.
- Demonstrable ability to diagnose, understand and fix technical performance issues
- Experience with building on (and troubleshooting issues with) popular themes and page builder tools would be a bonus
- Experience in Shopify development would be a bonus

NO WORK WEDNESDAYS
In early 2020, we introduced the option of a “No Work Wednesday” for our team members, so the many of our full time employees opt to do their 37.5 hour week in 4 days, instead of the standard 5. We’re also open to a part time or permanent contractor arrangement for the right person.
